Atopic Dermatitis and Eczema |
Atopic dermatitis affects all age groups and is
typically manifest by itchy dry skin and
allergies. Moderate to severe cases are
accompanied by crusting, scaling, blistering and
thickening of the skin. Eczema is a general term
that describes dry itchy skin, but its
appearance can mimic moderate cases of atopic
dermatitis. Approximately 17% of the U.S.
population is affected by these conditions. Once
symptomatic, the skin remains sensitive to
flare-ups. Some types of atopic dermatitis and
eczema are inherited. Other types are caused by
irritants such as chemicals and detergents or
allergens such as nickel. There is no cure for
atopic dermatitis or eczema.
