Seborrheic Dermatitis and Dandruff |
Seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff are thought
to be related conditions. Seborrheic dermatitis
is a common skin disorder affecting
approximately 20% of the U.S. population. It is
characterized by a red, scaly, itchy rash most
commonly seen on the scalp, sides of the nose,
eyebrows, eyelids, behind the ears, and middle
of the chest. Other areas, such as the navel and
groin may be affected.
Dandruff appears as scaling on the scalp without
redness. Seborrhea is excessive oiliness of the
skin, especially of the scalp and face, without
redness or scaling. Patients with seborrhea may
have seborrheic dermatitis. There is no cure for
either seborrheic dermatitis or dandruff but
these conditions can often be controlled with
topical treatments or phototherapy.
